Our History

No other wholesale produce company takes better care of its customers than Liberty Fruit Company, Inc. Building customer relationships may be the only thing that exceeds the quality of its fruits and vegetables. That’s the way it all started, in 1965, when Issie and Mary Caviar first sold from their pick-up truck near the Kansas City Market. Within months they were selling and delivering a growing list of produce items to small retail grocers.

Arnold, the oldest son, joined the company full-time in 1971. Only one year later Liberty Fruit moved to its first wholesale residence in Kansas City, Missouri. Issie and Mary retired from the forefront in 1982, when Arnold and his wife, Carol, purchased the family business. With a focus on the retail grocery trade, Liberty Fruit doubled its business over the next ten years, while adding wholesale and food service customers to its menu.

In 1994, business growth provided another opportunity for the company to move to its present 126,000 square foot, multi-temperature-regulated facility in Kansas City, Kansas. After their college experiences, the Caviar’s children were welcomed into the family business. Allen serves as President, Cory is the MIS Director, and Allison is a Secretary.

Today, Liberty Fruit stands tall as a fully-secured, refrigerated operation with the Repack Division, Mary’s Pride; the Processing Division, Carol’s Cuts; a fleet of over 50 GPS-monitored trucks and tractor trailers, and over 260 dedicated employees who have positioned Liberty Fruit as a wholesale leader in the produce industry.

Serving a diverse customer base that now extends 500 miles from Kansas City, Liberty Fruit is a premier distributor of high-quality produce to over 1,200 food service and institutional customers, over 300 grocery retailers, and another 100 wholesale customers. Under construction is a new state-of-the-art 30,000 square foot, multi-temperature-regulated facility which will support the community and growing customer demand. Liberty Fruit is three generations who live by a passion and commitment to provide the freshest and finest quality produce to all customers.
